Positive + Negative
The first project in Communication Design Foundations introduces the students to the development of composition and communication. They choose two words from a prompt list and create a single presentation of two compositions, each communicating and concept about the word through the use of symbol and metaphor, and the implication of positive and negative space. Final images are hand-rendered in black ink.
Reduction in Form
The students photograph a building or structure in an environment, and they create a composition that communicates a concept or message. Through reduction of form, the original photograph is composed into positive and negative shapes, with unnecessary details left out in order to show a clear visual message. They also write a statement of intent to explain their concept and message.
