Positive + Negative
The first project in Communication Design Foundations introduces the students to the development
of composition and communication. They choose two words from a prompt list and create a single presentation of two compositions, each communicating a concept about the word through the use of symbol and metaphor, and the implication of positive and negative space. Final images are hand-rendered in black ink.
Reduction in Form
The students photograph a building or structure in an environment, and they create a composition that communicates a concept or message. Through reduction of form, the original photograph is composed into positive and negative shapes, with unnecessary details left out in order to show a clear visual message. They also write a statement of intent to explain their concept and message.
